ROYAL DOULTON

THE PROJECT

Royal Doulton wanted copy that connected, articles that told their story, and a way to weave the threads of their approach to sustainability into the fabric of their products.

The below piece is one of many from a series of sustainability-focussed articles, newsletters, and social media posts.

These were written and executed alongside the launch of two new collections, focussing on curating your pieces over a lifetime.

Slow-living, mindful-being, and caring for our planet.

THE WORK

TO LAST A LIFETIME

Made to last and here for a long time, as well as a good time. Our pieces and products are made with love and longevity in mind, for you to treasure and to keep for years to come. We believe that these pieces should be woven into the everyday, helping you tell the story of your lives and being there for the moments, both the big and the small.

That’s why we test and check and test again throughout the development process of our pieces, to make sure they can handle life’s challenges exactly as you do. From scratch resistance to testing our glazes, to make sure every single element of a Royal Doulton piece is going to withstand the test of time.

Our pieces are designed to be used, day in, day out. They’re not for saving for special occasions, Christmas dinner, or when your mother in law comes to stay. They’re for the real and raw moments, late-night eats and early morning starts, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, they will be there with you.

The design process is so much more than the visuals; we design by functionality and with sustainability in mind, too. Our pieces are hand finished, and our glazes are hand-dipped, making each one unique and original in its own way. Rigorous testing is a part of the process too, to ensure that our pieces will still look just as good when they have been loved and used, washed and dried many, many times. From little things like checking the curve of a handle to ensuring that our glazes are scratch proof, we care about the details so you can love your pieces for longer.

And when we say longer, we really do mean longer. Each piece and collection is designed with the hope of being passed down, through generations or between friends, it’s all about sharing moments and coming together, and our pieces will be right by your side for that.

They’re built to last a lifetime, and then some.

It’s important when putting anything out into the world, that we consider the impact that it will have long after we, the creators, are gone. We have a duty of responsibility and sensibility to consider these things, and they are so important for us as a brand, to make sure that we are creating with purpose, and that our pieces will be here for many to enjoy.

That is exactly why they are built the way they are. Carefully considered and made to last, from quality materials and pulled together by talented artisans and creators, that share our vision for the future.

There is another important element here as well which is formed during the design process. That is the ability to mix and match our pieces, sharing collections and crossing the barriers of colour, print, and play. As a result, our collections complement each other while being the perfect contrast, meaning you can create a table that is yours and yours alone.

These pieces and items live as a family, they are more than tableware and not the kind of thing that needs to be retired after a couple of seasons. They are designed to be timeless and to grow with you as and where you need them to. You can add new colours, new pieces and a fresh look by expanding your collection one piece at a time, with Bowles that nest beautifully together, and different sizes and colourways to consider.

Life happens, and we know that. So, whether it is a cup of tea with an old friend or a late-night feast, our pieces are designed to be put through the mill, tested and tried, with no deterioration in the glaze, or metal markings from those scrape-every-last-bit-of-the-bowl kinds of meals.

The vision is that in ten, twenty, thirty years time, these pieces will have helped you to tell and shape your story, and you can share them with your children, grandchildren, and family friends. We are not led by fashion; we are led by style and timeless silhouettes that are both practical and sleek and the notion that beauty can be simple.

If you were to build a collection from Royal Doulton, our Pure range sits seamlessly alongside the more colourful ranges. And, even those, you can mix them and match them to fully express your style and to create a tablescape that tells your story. From Sunday lunches to brunches with friends, add and take away what you do and do not need, and as your family grows, so can your table.

Made to last isn’t just something we say. It runs through every single thing we do. From the planning of the designs to ensure longevity and use, to the materials we use and the testing that goes into each and every piece we release. Practical pieces that are multi-use and made for the everyday, they are designed for the beautifully messy, perfectly imperfect thing that is life.

It is important that we create with intention, and you can do the same, choosing to invest in pieces that will last and withstand the uses of life. Another wonderful thing is that our pieces work well with the things you already have at home. Whether that is existing cutlery, glassware, thrifted pieces or ones handed down from generations before.

Your table should tell a story, the tapestry of your life. From the very first moments, the small and the big, and everything that has made your house a home over the years, however few or many there have been. Moments are made to be remembered and cherished, with these pieces serving as the everyday reminder of the magic within these and all of the excitement of what is still to come.

This ethos and mentality is a vital part of Royal Doulton. We are all about slowing down and really living in each and every moment. So, join us, and savour the everyday.
